Import Regulations of Japanese used cars in Malawi

Large numbers of Japanese used car’s are imported in Malawi but there are certain rules and regulations that are necessary to follow in order to import the car in a legal way. There is no age restriction on Japanese used vehicle imported in Malawi. However, importation of only right-hand drive car’s is permitted in Malawi. Exception is provided in case of special car’s like Ambulance, Fire engine. There is no mandatory road worthiness inspection on imported car’s.

Malawi has 3 nearest ports. Those are Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), Durban (South Africa) and Maputo (Mozambique) for shipment of vehicle. RoRo (Roll-On, Roll-Off) method is generally used for shipment of used car’s. On request of customers, shipping method of containers are also available.


 

 There are few documents required which are mention below:

  1. Original Commercial/Purchase Invoice
  2. Drivers License & International Insurance Policy (green card)
  3. Original Certificate of Title and Registration
  4. Copy of client’s work contract
  5. Original Bill of Lading– It must show Chassis number, Engine number, Cubic Capacity, Manufacturing year, brand and model.

  1. 10% import duty
  2. 5% excise duty
  3. 16.5% VAT

* Used Trucks Over 3 Ton

  1. 10% import duty
  2. 5% excise duty

* Used Trucks Over 10 Ton

  1. 5% excise duty

* Up to 2000cc- seating capacity less than 10 people.

  1. Import Duty- 25%
  2. VAT- 16.5%
  3. Excise-15%

* 2000-2500cc -seating capacity less than 10 people.

  1. Import Duty- 25%
  2. VAT- 16.5%
  3. Excise-30%

* 2500-3000cc- seating capacity less than 10.

  1. Import Duty- 25%
  2. VAT- 16.5%
  3. Excise-40%

* Over 3000c- seating capacity less than 10.

  1. Import Duty- 25%
  2. VAT- 16.5%
  3. Excise-50%
