First Generation (XP10; 1999–2005)
The first generation Toyota Vitz was unveiled in 1999 and ended in 2005. Toyota built the first Vitz based on the success of the Toyota Starlet and sold it globally as a universal model. Because of that reason, there were many special things given for this car:
Exterior Design
Toyota used the ideas of a Greek designer who was working in an international design studio for the Vitz. So the car received an European design with rigidity and hardness that had never been seen in any other compact cars at that time. Thanks to this design and its excellent utility, the largely held point that a small car is comparatively low-coast was overturned, and the Toyota Vitz achieved good reviews in the market.
Interior Design
Compared to other compact cars before, the first generation Toyota Vitz had a roomier interior space. Instead of being placed directly across from the driver’s seat, the gauges (including the speedometer) were located right at the centre of the dashboard.
Engine
The first generation Toyota Vitz owned all 4-cylinder, and the 997cc/ 70 Hp engine and 1.3Liter/87 HP engine were implemented. The car offered 02 types of transmission: the 5-speed manual transmission and the 4-speed automatic transmission, and in 2002, the continuous variable transmission (CVT) was added. Addition to it, 10-15 model fuel consumption was optimized to 25.5 km per litre by using the Intelligent Idling Stop System. As for the drive system, Front-wheel-drive and 4-wheel-drive were given for this lineup from the beginning.
Second Generation (XP90; 2005–2011)
The second generation Toyota Vitz debuted in 2005 and its production ended in 2011. This generation remained largely the appearance of the first generation with some added mechanical upgrades. Additionally, the first generation offered three- and five-door options, but the second generation was available in a five-door option only.
Exterior Design
The second generation offered more exterior color variations than the first one. Besides, changes were made to the lamp designs and the bumper.
Interior design
Because of the increased measurement of the car body, the interior space was increased giving more functionality and spaciousness. And like the first generation, the gauges and speedometer were still located at the dashboard centre. In 2007, Toyota added to this lineup some minor changes, and the SRS curtain shield airbag (front and rear seats) and the SRS side airbags (driver’s seat/ passengers’ seat) were offered as standard equipment in all vehicles, proving the focus on enhancing safety.
Engine
The engine options were kept the same like the first generation with 1.0-Liter, 1.3-Liter 87HP, 1.5-Liter 110 HP - but for the 1.0-liter engine only, Toyota gave to it the Daihatsu-produced 3-CL engine with 71 HP. In order to lower fuel consumption, the smart Idling Stop System was offered as a package option.
In terms of transmission, the CVT was developed into the Super CVT-I, enhancing acceleration.
To improve the safety, this generation used a new car body and improved its crashworthiness. For the drive system, the second generation offered the front-wheel-drive and 4-wheel-drive (for the 1.3-liter engine only).
Third Generation (XP130; 2012–present)
Toyota introduced the third generation Toyota Vitz, which is the current model in December 2010. Let’s see what Toyota equipped for this generation now!
Exterior Design
In the past, the car had frequent been known as a car for women. But in the third generation, the car received changes in the light areas and extension of the front overhang, making it more appealing to male drivers. In general, the car was extended to 1,695 mm, the maximal length for 5 number vehicles. As a result, the interior length was extended by 35 mm, to measure 1,1915 mm.
Interior Design
The third generation did received an improved interior design as well. The inside space was roomier than previous models thanks to the extension of the car. In order to prevent suntan and rises in temperature inside the vehicle, Toyota installed a Super UV Cut glass which cuts nearly 99% of UV on the front door glass. The gauges and speedometer were placed in front of the driver, about the steering column.
Engine
Like the previous generation, the engine of the third generation Toyota Vitz included: 1.0-liter 3-CL with 69 HP, 1.5-liter 110 HP, and addition to it, the enhanced 1.3-liter 4-CL with 95 HP. For the 1.3 Front-wheel-drive vehicle, the upgraded Smart Idling stop function, the “Smart Stop Package”, was installed, realizing a 10-15 model fuel consumption of 26.5 km per liter.
This generation offered Front-Wheel-Drive and 4-Wheel-Drive (for the 1.3-liter engine only) in its lineup.
