Is Having Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) Useful At All? Let’s Find Out!

ByTsukasa Azuma-February 21, 2019

When it comes to applying brakes effectively and instantly, the anti-lock brake system is all that is needed. It is a safety system that comes in almost every car model nowadays and helps in maintaining traction with the road surface. People still doubt as to whether ABS helps with faster braking or not. Here’s the answer.

Does ABS Help With Faster Stopping?

The anti-lock braking system is an automated braking mechanism that uses the two strategies namely; threshold braking and cadence braking to stop a car immediately on its track. Let’s look at how it helps stop a car.

1. The Working Of Anti-Lock Braking System

The power of an Anti-lock Braking System is such that it helps in stopping the car nearly on any road surface. The installed wheel speed sensors aid in conveying to the automatic system about the slips if any. Now, when the car comes to the point where it is vulnerable to skidding, the ABS activates. Skidding is a situation where the wheels are in the lock-up state, but the car forces itself to move forward.

The ABS will help unlock the wheels so that they can move in synchronization with the car’s movement without resisting. When the “locking” converts into “rolling;” the car can move again. The ABS also enforces the wheels to lock again, and the cycle continues until the car is stable.

2. Does Anti-Lock Braking System Shorten Braking Distance?

The overall control of the car enhances when it has an Anti-lock Brake System in place. The stopping distances might decrease or may increase as it depends on what path you are driving. For a fact, the stopping distance decreases when driving on dry or less slippery roads. On the other hand, the stopping distance increases while driving on wobbly gravel or snowy pathways.

The one unwavering advantage of anti-lock braking systems points at its perfect steering control ability. Every newer model is already equipped with these innovative systems as they are successfully helping in minimizing the overall crash rates and the impact force in case of an emergency.

3. What If The Car Did Not Have An ABS System?

Even the best of drivers cannot achieve the optimal performance of the Anti-lock Brake System. If a vehicle is devoid of the anti-lock brakes, he would have to apply the brakes manually to avert the wheels from locking. In the manual braking, one cannot expect the brake force to be optimal as in case of the ABS.

Yes, ABS is more than helpful, but totally relying on it also not recommended. Earlier studies have shown that how people take more risks owing to their dependency on the Anti-lock Braking Systems. One should understand that their safety is in their hands, and one cannot be missing on enhancing and implementing the driving skills.

Wrapping Up

This is all about whether the ABS helps stop a car in a quicker manner or not. Having read through the information above, one thing is quite clear; the Anti-lock Braking System stopping at a shorter or a longer distance depends on the type of path ahead. Lastly, do not doubt the capabilities of the ABS as it helps in giving the control a driver desires.

The anti-lock braking system is a safety system that is present in almost every car model nowadays. It is an automated braking system which prevents the wheels from locking up during braking and thereby maintains proper contact with the road surface. This braking system has a perfect steering control ability and thereby it minimizes the crash rates. This is more effective than normal brakes and helps to stop the car immediately on its track. It prevents skidding of a vehicle even in slippery conditions. So it is useful to stop the vehicle on ice and in wet roads.
