It takes measures for avoiding collisions and mitigating the impact of severe crashes. The safety sense becomes active in a broad range of vehicle speeds to make sure the maximum safety no matter at which speed you are driving. These safety functions are designed to provide protection on the road to everyone – drivers, passengers, and pedestrians.

The TSS can detect pedestrians.

Toyota started rolling out the safety features in 2015 and the TSS was available in most models released in Japan, Europe, and North America by the end of 2017. it comes as a standard in almost all models released and set to be released in 2018 and 2019, respectively.

An Analysis Of The Toyota Safety Sense Features

The high-tech safety technologies can be found on all types of Toyota vehicles. It means you are quite safe on the road whether you are driving an SUV or a truck.

Here’re short descriptions of the features included in the Toyota Safety Sense:

The Toyota Pre-Collision System

The system determines the possibility of collisions by analyzing the road conditions in front of the vehicle. It uses a built-in camera and radar to calculate the risks. When there is a real threat of clash, the system warns the driver via audio and visual signs. It even reduces the speed and sometimes applies the brakes to prevent an imminent collision.

Some models have a few extra features like pedestrian and bicyclist detection.

Lane Departure Alert

Your car will have your back if you veer from the chosen lane. It uses a windshield camera to detect whether the car crosses the visible lane markings. The system activates when you stray from the supposed route while driving at 32 mph or higher.

Toyota models that also have Electronic Power Steering (EPS) offer the Steering Assist feature. It notices unintended roving of the car and can also apply small corrective inputs.

The Corolla Hatchback has the additional Road Edge Detection feature to detect car drifting from the road to grass, soil, or the side of the road.

Automatic High Beams

The high beam keeps your vision clear without blinding other drivers. The system kicks in when you drive at more than 25 mph. It switches between high and low beams depending on the headlights and taillights of oncoming and preceding vehicles, respectively.

Toggling between beams offers clear vision at night.

Using radar and a camera, the system automatically maintains a preset distance from the vehicles in front of you. Intended to be used on the highway, it can slow down the car and apply the brakes if necessary.

The Toyota Safety Sense system in Corolla Hatchback models enjoys two additional features – Road Sign Assist (RSA) and Lance Tracing Assist (LTA). The RSA detects the road signs by using a forward-facing camera while the LTA (available in automatic transmission only) assists with keeping the vehicle centered in the road.
