The Must-Know Oil Pump Failure Symptoms

ByTsukasa Azuma-December 22, 2020

Talk about the most crucial part of the vehicle and it is the oil pump. It is said to lubricate the bearings in the engine and if there is an oil pump failure, you are in real trouble. For that reason, we will provide you the list of oil pump failure symptoms.

The Must-Know Oil Pump Failure Symptoms

There will be several mechanical issues and you need to deal with your vehicle very carefully. Here are a few oil pump failure symptoms:

Excess Noise Released By Hydraulic Lifters

Oil pump failure symptoms list cannot miss the hydraulic lifters

They are a part of the valve train mechanism of the vehicle and one of the oil pump failure symptoms. There must be enough oil to lubricate so that the hydraulic lifters can operate properly. When there is an Oil Pump Failure, the flow of the oil to these filters will reduce. This will make the hydraulic filters be excess noise and if it continues for a longer time, the performance of the lifters will surely be affected, thereby decreasing the life of the components.

Whining Oil Pump

Whining oil pump is one of symptoms of bad oil pump

By default, the oil pump doesn’t make any noise, yet it is one of oil pump failure symptoms. Answering for the wondering, when there is a problem with the oil pump, it can get noisier and noisier.  You will get to hear some whining noise when the car is idle which is an indication that there is a problem with the gears of the oil pump. It might have either deteriorated or would have worn out.

Valve-Train

Valve -Train is another one of oil pump failure symptoms

The engine is the most important part of a vehicle and any problem with an engine can affect the entire functioning of the vehicle. The seals, valve guides, and push rods are a part of the valve-train. All these components need  lubrication to function properly or it will be one of the oil pump failure symptoms list. An oil pump failure will reduce the supply of oil to these components leading to several problems. The valve-train will become noisier due to the lack of oil supply.

Engine Temperature:

Temperature is one of the most common oil pump failure symptoms

The oil helps the engine to remain cooler and reduces the friction between the components. When the oil supply decreases, the operating temperature of the vehicle will automatically increase. This is due to the friction of the component due to low supply of oil, which is one of the most common symptoms of bad oil pump. The friction will increase the heat within the components which increases the temperature.  Wondering if you could get a hint about it? Yes, there is a way to find it out. When the dashboard’s heat light lightens up, it means the engine’s’ temperature has increased.

Oil Pressure Decease

Oil pressure plays a huge part

The oil pressure plays a vital role in the mechanism of a vehicle. It is responsible for regulating the oil pressure. When the exact amount or pressure reaches to the engine of the vehicle, it forces the vehicle to move. The engine along with other components must be greased so that lubrication takes place and the vehicle operates. When there is an oil pump failure, the oil pressure fluctuates which will affect the vehicle.

Thus, these are some of the common oil pump failure symptoms and you must immediately take an action in such situations. Never drive a vehicle when there is a risk associated with it. Get your Oil Pump checked and repair it as and when required.

Though not not in respect to the above article but somehow related (oil & cars / automobiles from Japan); may i seek opinion. My dad has an old version of Japan model of Isuzu 2.5 elf indirect injection diesel truck that been lying since 2000 (when he drove it to our home garage & parked not cause it had any mechanical problem but cause no one was there to utilize it) & on August of last year (2016) it was kicked (engine was ignited) with no problems at all & been moving till last month when we changed engine oil, oil & fuel filters, cylinder head gasket & water pump but when we drove it last Sunday (19th) at a speed of 60Kph after 30 Kms we heard all over sudden a knocking noise from the engine. We checked whether it was leaking oil in vain & nothing was leaking. The engine by then was excessively over heating & it finally grinded to halt & wouldn’t kick again that we had to tow it home. We called a mechanic but he wasn’t very conversant with such old models & was doing a lot of guess work. We are wondering what would have gone a miss
