Buying Guide
After selling millions of units in the last 15 years, Mazda need not give any proof for the popularity of the Mazda 3 model—also known as Mazda Axela in Japan. It comes in a 5-door hatchback and 4-door sedan, and the latest 4th-gen model made its debut in the Los Angeles Auto Show last year.
The enormous success party depends on the car’s innovative Kodo design and stylish look but high quality and reliability factors have also played a large role in molding that reputation.
Have you been looking for a Mazda Axela for sale but not sure whether it will be the right purchase decision? Here’s a guide to the features of the latest model so you can make the right decision.
Overview Of Mazda 3 Generations
The automaker launched the first Mazda 3 in 2003 as a 2004 model. It replaced Mazda 323 or Familia in the C-segment. A completely renovated second-gen model hit the market in 2009, while the 3rd gen cars arrived in mid-2013 as a 2014 model.
The fourth generation was unveiled in November 2018 and a 2019 model. It is equipped with the SkyActiv technology, which was first introduced in the 2012 year model. The system is on the charge of responsive speed control in any driving condition.
Mazda sells a high-performance version of Axela as Mazdaspeed Axela in Japan, Mazdaspeed3 in North America, and Mazda3 MPS in Europe.
1. Mazda Axela Exterior
The design of the all-new Mazda 3 Axela takes a more human-centric approach rather than following the footsteps of the competitors—Hyundai 130, Toyota Corolla, or Volkswagen Golf.
Being identical under the framework and hood, Mazda Axela hatchback vs sedan share some external design differences. The sedan looks more traditional while the hatchback dons a semi-sporty makeover. The former enjoys a bigger boot area for having a longer body, but the latter features a versatile load area.
The Mazda Axela dimensions of the new models are bigger than those of the previous versions.
2. Mazda Axela Interior
The premium trims are equipped with leather seats and alloy pedals. Power windows, a sunglass holder, and automatic and central locking come standard in all models, but the auto headlights and rain-sensing wipers are the properties of upgraded models.
The 8.8-inch infotainment system does not have a touch screen but features Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth. There are also a DAB digital radio, MP3 playback, 8-speaker sound system (base models), 12-speaker Bose audio system (upgraded trims), heated seats, heated steering wheel, keyless entry, and a plethora of other features.

Despite extending the wheelbase, the 2019 model does not have a bigger cabin. A six-foot adult will find enough toe and legroom, but if they sit in the back seats, the front seat needs a bit of adjustment.
3. How Much Cargo Capacity Does The Car Have?
With 295 liters of boot space, which is 13 liters less than the 2018 model, the latest Mazda Axela offers decent storage for all your stuff. The trunk has a cargo cover and an optional cargo liner tray.
If you find the storage smaller than your needs, go for the sedan version as it comes with 444 liters of boot capacity.
4. Engine And Transmission Performance
The new model does not bring any significant change in the engine specs—disappointing to everyone expecting a big power boost.
The base trim has a 2.0L 4-cylinder unit that produces 114kW of horsepower and 200Nm of torque. Both manual and automatic lovers can rejoice because you can choose between a six-speed manual and automatic transmission.
The mid- to high-trim models enjoy another 2.5L 4-cylinder option. It generates 139kW horsepower and 252Nm of torque. This option also comes with a manual and auto gearbox.
The front-wheel drivetrain is standard, but most trim configurations offer an optional all-wheel drive.
The 2019 model discards the rear multi-link suspension in favor of a torsion beam setup. The extra stiffness enhances the handling and makes the car even more reliable when driving around turns. The aerodynamic drag is lower compared to previous models and the cornering effort is minimal. The performance gets even sharper when you flick the ‘Sport’ toggle.
5. How Safe Is the Car?
Several attractive features including forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, auto emergency braking (AEB) in high speed are standard across all trims. In addition, there are top-tether attachments and one ISOFIX car seat point in the rear row. To give the best protection in the event of a collision, there are airbags all around.
Some exciting safety features exclusive to this new model are brake assist, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, dynamic stability control, and many more.
6. How Is The Fuel Economy?
The fuel economy for the 2019 model is still not available. However, given the impressive running time of the previous models, it can be hoped that the new version won’t disappoint.
If you have fuel efficiency in mind, a Mazda 3 is an excellent choice. It offers hundreds of kilometers between refills. The 2.0L unit runs nearly 5.7L per-100km while the 2.5L unit yields 6.5L per-100km.
7. Mazda Axela Price
The basic trim of the 2019 model starts at $21,000—one of the highest price tags for the basic model of a gas-powered compact car. The threshold for the hatchback model is even higher—$23,600.
It is possible to get a used 2017 model at less than $20,000. The prices will be even lower if you go for something older than that.
Shall You Buy a New or Used Mazda Axela?
The final puzzle in making an automobile purchase decision. People with no budget problem should obviously go for a new model because of the redesign and all the bells and whistles. But buying a used Mazda Axela will save thousands of dollars. However, anything older than the 2016 year model won’t be a good choice, as it does not have the touch-screen infotainment system and a rearview camera.
