1. Intro

The Subaru BRZ, aka the twin of the Toyota 86, is one of the lightweight sports cars on sale in both new and used car markets. The name BRZ stands for Boxer Engine, Rear-wheel drive and Zenith.

From the first debut until present, the BRZ has never fallen out of customers’ choice, thanks to its good handling, lightness, fun-to-drive experience and affordable price. It is also well-known as the only car in Subaru’s lineup coming exclusively with rear-wheel drive

2. Subaru BRZ Vs. Toyota 86

Like the Japanese Toyota 86, the Subaru BRZ utilizes 16-inch steel wheels and features an RA base model lacking most interior comforts, with the only difference from the 86 RC being that the BRZ RA's bumpers are painted the same color as the body.

Although the Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86 are the twins, there are still some differences between them. The Subaru BRZ features a different headlight and grille assembly, and a different front fender vent. The Subaru BRZ’s grill is hexagonal, while that of the Toyota 86 is trapezoidal. The BRZ has a wraparound of LED parking lights in the headlight assembly, whereas daytime running lights are placed into the bumper.

In terms of suspension, the BRZ’s setup is different than that of the Toyota 86.

3. How Many Trim Levels Are Available?

The Subaru BRZ is available in many trim levels. The two main trim levels are: S Trim, known as Limited in North America, and R trim, known as Premium in North America. North American and Japanese BRZs offer a Subaru stereo unit, while Australian and European vehicles use a Toyota unit. Australian BRZs were initially available for sale online only.

4. Subaru BRZ Updates And Limited Editions

In 2013, Subaru introduced a BRZ tS model and sold it in Japan, tuned by STI. The tS model has interior changes including new gauges, a new front seat, steering wheel, and Alcantara accents, along with an improved suspension setup, STI bodykit, 18-inch silver BBS wheels, a larger drive shaft, front spoiler, and Brambo brakes.

A further tS GT package includes an adjustable carbon fibre rear wing, black BBS wheels and Recaro seats.

Only 500 tS units were produced, with a maximum of 250 of them being the GT package.

In 2015, a similar debut of 300 vehicles was offered again only in Japan.

In 2014, the BRZ received some updates to stay competitive in customers’ eyes. These updates include a new key fob and two new colors, including “WR Blue Pearl” metallic finish. Additionally, Subaru also released special editions both for the Australia and United States markets. In Australia, the Special Edition came at additional cost, featuring stripes across the bonnet, roof and boot; ST boot spoiler plus front, side and rear-side under spoilers; 17-inch STI black alloy wheels; a rear diffuser and a push-button starter switch. For American market, the Special Edition came half painted in Crystal Pearl White and the other half in Blue Pearl. This model featured red brake calipers, 17-inch STI black alloy wheels and STI body kit parts.

In 2015, Subaru introduced the limited edition Hyper Blue range across its WRX STI, WRX and BRZ models. This limited edition is fitted with a host of other cosmetic upgrades and is painted in Blue.

In 2018, a new limited edition, called SOA 50th Anniversary, was released, featuring satin chrome exterior trim and badging, Heritage Blue exterior color, and SOA 50th anniversary emblem. The interior features silver seatbelts, black upholstery with contrasting silver stitching, and the 50th Anniversary logo embroidered on the front seats and carpeted floor mats.
