Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class Review
1. Overview
The Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class is a series of subcompact executive cars produced by Mercedes-Benz since 2013. The car is available in 2 body styles: 4-door sedan and 5-door shooting brake. In the Mercedes model range, the CLA range is placed below the C-Class but above the A-Class. And CLA models tend to be less practical than the A-Class it is based on. The first generation started in 2013 and ceased in 2019. The second generation began in 2019 and still continues until present.
Its largest markets are the United States and Western Europe.
Strengths:
- Unique offering
- styling from certain angles
Weaknesses:
- The price and function is not better than the Mercedes Benz A-class
- The rear of the car is not practical
2. Exterior And Interior
From the first look you can see that the Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class is the sportier and more expensive version of the E-class in the Mercedes lineup. And it does a similar thing to the A-class.
Compared to the first generation CLA, the second generation comes with a more expensive look and lots of more refinements to attract customers.
Now let’s move into the car. One of the things Mercedes was kind of messed up with the old CLA was the interior. In the past, they used a lot of hard black plastic so it felt very cheap and not really up to Mercedes standards. Now, the latest models come with an improved interior which is so nice and you will feel it could be an E-class here.
The dashboard is neat. The switchgear feels premium and solid. The front seats are pretty good and the steering wheel is sporty. The minor imperfection is the sat nav screen which sticks out of the top of the dash, and seems like a bit of an afterthought.
Another thing you might don’t like about this car is its rear seats. The rear seats are very cramped. They are not comfortable for adult passengers to sit on as there is very limited amount of headroom and legroom. And the cargo space is also small, compounding the practicality issues.
So if you want a better look Merc, you should go for a C-Class coupe. If you want a more practical Merc, buying an A-Class will be ideal for you. In both carse, you will be disappointed if you pick a CLA.
3. Engine And Performance

Second Generation (2019 - present)

- 2.0 L OM654 I4 turbo (diesel)

In old CLAs, the driving dynamics weren’t anything to write whole about unless it was the AMG version which was hilarious. Later CLAs comes with a huge improvement in terms of driving dynamics. One of the biggest improvements to the CLA is the 7-speed DCT transmission. The one in the old CLA felt really unrefined so it really took away from how luxurious the CLA felt. It was really judged at low speeds and sometimes it just slammed into gear. But with the new CLA, it is actually really smooth and it always feels it is in the right place.
The new CLA also comes with a new suspension. When the old one was harsh to point where it was really uncomfortable and it drove really but it kind of beats you up when you were driving. The new one strikes a really good balance between sport and luxury so it can hold a corner really well but it also doesn’t beat you up and it feels really comfortable.
4. Fuel Consumption
The Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class has much better fuel economy than A-Class.
The average fuel consumption of the CLA 180 is 3.9 l / 100km in the city and 4.8 l / 100km on highways.
5. Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class Price
The 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class costs from $33,100 (the lowest price). You will have to pay extra $20,000 for the AMG version.
To save some money, you can choose a used Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class. On used car market, a used Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class for sale costs from $21,000 to $48,000 depending on model year, mileage and other conditions of the car. So you can base on this price range to pick a suitable car for your demand.
