1. First Generation (1996-2001)

The first generation Stepwgn was introduced to the public at the Tokyo Motor Show 1995. The car originally went on sale on 8th May 1996. While most vehicles of the car’s competitors had the engine placed under the driver’s seat, or a cabover type, the engine of the Honda Stepwagon was the latter, and was designed based on the Honda Civic.

To optimize profitability, Honda used cost reduction measures, such as the car design reduced the use of steel parts and panels and there was only one engine and transmission option: a 2.0-litre inline four and a CVT (continuously variable transmission automatic).

1997 update: in 1997, the Honda StepWagon received some updates such as dual SRS airbags, standardizing ABS and some convenience features.

2. Second Generation (2001 - 2005)

In April 2001, Honda released the second generation StepWagon, which was largely designed based on the first generation’s design.

The second generation was made for families and children. The sliding door located on the passenger’s side was kept the same as that of the first generation. Four seating arrangements were available: “play mode” (sitting opposite each other), “sleep mode”, “food mde”, and “cargo mode” (the rear seat row is folded flat to give more cargo space).

2003 update:

The Honda StepWagon was redesigned in June 2003, with a new front and rear fascias to fit the look of other Honda cars. Besides, the “Spada” series was unveiled at the same time, with unique fenders and a 2.4-litre K24A DOHC i-VTEC, making 162 PS (119.2 kW; 159.8 hp).

3. Third Generation (2005-2009)

The third generation debuted in 2005 in a totally new look. Instead of having sliding doors on one side, the third generation had sliding doors on both sides, in order to stay competitive with other rivals such as Toyota Estima and Nissan Serena. Though the car’s size was smaller than that of previous generations, the cabin space was unchanged thanks to a new low-platform chassis that also enhanced the handling of the car.
