2. The Concept

The design and production of the Honda CR-Z followed two other Honda Hybrid concept cars: the Honda Small Hybrid Sports and the Honda Remix.

According to Honda, the name “CR-Z” stands for “Compact Renaissance Zero” - which reflects the idea of a renaissance in making compact cars. The CEO of Honda at that time, Mr Fukui said that the CR-Z was made to become a “Sporty, Incredibly Efficient and Inexpensive” car.

The CR-Z is fitted by a 1.5-litre i-VTEC SOHC inline-4 engine, paired with Honda’s IMA (Integrated Motor Assist). A 6-speed manual transmission is offered as standard equipment whereas a CVT (continuously variable transmission) comes as an optional. The hybrid system create 121 bhp (90 kW; 123 PS) at 6000 rpm and 128 lb⋅ft (174 N⋅m) at 1000 to 1500 rpm (123 lb⋅ft (167 N⋅m) on CVT-equipped models). The gasoline engine contributes 111 bhp (83 kW; 113 PS) at 6000 rpm and 106 lb⋅ft (144 N⋅m) at 4800 rpm.

On November 21st, 2012, Honda launched the 2013 Honda CR-Z on American market. This version came with a new, higher voltage (144V), 0.6 kWh lithium ion battery pack, a more powerful electric motor (from 10 to 15 kilowatts) and some minor cosmetic changes. The 2013 CR-Z sends out maximum 130HP at 6000 RPM 140 pound-feet of torque (127 pound-feet on CVT-equipped models), a gain of eight horsepower and 12 pound-feet of torque (4 pound-feet on CVT equipped models).

All CR-Z cars are equipped with a new Plus Sport System as standard. If the car is traveling over 18 mph and the battery is more than 30%, the driver can use the “S+” button on the steering wheel to create more acceleration for up to 5 seconds. A new lower final drive ratio and a bigger clutch are given to the manual-transmission versions. EPA-rated fuel economy figures increased by 1 mpg highway for those with the six-speed manual transmission and  1 mpg city for CVT equipped models.

The Honda CR-Z is a very efficient car in terms of fuel consumption.Japanese fuel economy figures are 4.0L per 100 km (59 MPG) for CVT (continuously variable transmission) and 4.4L per 100 km (53 MPG) for manual transmission in 10•15 model. The figures are 4.4L per 100 km (53 MPG) for CVT and 4.9L per 100 km (48 mpg) for MT in JC08 mode.

7. Refresh
