The BMW 4 Series is a range of coupe, fastback and convertible models produced by the German automaker BMW since 2013. The BMW 4 Series is stylish, fun-to-drive, relatively spacious and comfortable, although it is beginning to look a little dated now.
Essential Things You Need To Know Before Buying A BMW 4 Series For Sale
1. Overview
Strengths:
- Fun to drive
- Good choice of engines
- Quite practical
Weaknesses:
- A bit noisy on the motorway
- Lacks the latest technology
- A bit dated interior
2. BMW 4 Series Interior & Exterior
The BMW 4 Series is a sporty vehicle that strikes a decent compromise between comfort, style and space. This series is available in two-door, four-door and convertible versions for customers to choose. The first BMW 4 Series went on sale in 2014, and received some changes in 2017 with an updated interior, revised styling and more standard equipment.
Come into any BMW 4 series car, you will find out that it is a practical car with plenty of space in both the front and back seats. (even a tall person can sit comfortably in the back seats).
In terms of design, although the BMW 4 series doesn’t have the rock-solid build quality of the Audi A5 or the Mercedes C-Class Coupe’s luxurious feel, it is still really functional. And like most BMW vehicles, the dashboard is located towards the driver and the low seat makes it feel sporty.
The car comes standard with the BMW’s iDrive infotainment system which is the best system on the market, with intuitive controls and well laid out menus. The rotary knob placed between the front seats means you can control the standard-fit satellite navigation without having to take your eyes off the road for prolonged periods of time.
Therefore, the driver will spend much concentration on the 4 Series’ brilliant drive. Its suspension doesn’t let the car lean too much in bends, its steering is accurate and its controls are well weighted. In terms of driving experience, the BMW brings us more sporty feel than the Audi or Mercedes.
3. Performance And Economy
BMW equipped for the 4 Series many engine types, ranging from 2.0L, 4-CL diesel fitted to the 420d, to the 3.0L twin-turbocharged 6-CL engine fitted to the performance-orientated M4.
Standing in the middle is the 430i petrol. It received a 255hp 2.0L turbocharged 4-CL engine, that helps the BMW speed up from 0 - 62 mph within 5.9 seconds. It runs more freely than the 420d diesel, gets official fuel economy of 43.5 mpg and is not as rattly - not too bad for a vehicle like this.
If you need a more efficient fuel economy, you can go for the 326hp, 3.0L 6-CL 440i petrol. It has a nice engine sound to boot and make the 4 Series quick enough to dispatch serious sports cars.
Besides, if you rack up lots of miles, it will be hard to ignore the basic 4-CL 190 hp 420d. This engine helps the 4 Series speed up from 0 to 62 mph in 7.3 seconds, does not feel as dull as most diesel engines, and give superb fuel economy of 62.8 mpg.
The smooth 6-CL 330d and 335d diesel engines give plenty of poke. The latter models come with standard four-wheel drive and would have no issue keeping up with a super-fast M4 on a wet day. The 335d can speed up from 0 to 62 MPH in just 4.7 seconds but can give fuel economy of up to 50.4 MPG - a winning combination in anyone’s book.
4. Driving Experience
Driving a BMW 4 Series is more fun than cars such as the Audi A5 and Mercedes C-Class, thanks to its minimal body lean, accurate and quick steering and confidence-inspiring firm suspension.
It is very easy to drive the BMW in the city, especially if you choose the automatic gearbox. All models are fitted with standard front and rear parking sensors, and good rearward visibility makes reverse parking simple.
On the motorway, the BMW 4 Series is louder than alternatives such as the Mercedes C-Class and Audi A5, which don’t suffer from the same level of wind and road noise.
5. BMW 4 Series Price
On used car markets, a used BMW 4 Series for sale costs from $22,000 to $50,000 (FOB price) depending on model year, mileage, color, installed features and other conditions of the car. The newer, better the car is, the higher price it costs. So when buying a BMW 4 Series, you can base on these factors to pick a suitable car for your demand and budget.
