Toyota Avensis: A Large Family Car
1. Overview
The Toyota Avensis is a mid-size/large family car manufactured by Toyota Motor Corporation. The car went on sale in 1997 and is still in production until present. The first generation Avensis started in 1997 and ended in 2003. The second generation was introduced in 2003 and ceased in 2009. The third generation began in 2009 and still continues until today.
The first two generations were available in 4-door saloon, 5-door liftback, and estate forms. The current generation is available in sedan or wagon style.
Strengths:
- Low running cost
- Spacious and comfortable cabin
- Its engine has been set up for long distance work
- Decent fuel economy
- High reliability
Weaknesses:
- The cabin looks a bit old-fashioned
- There is too much amount of hard, cheap plastic inside the car
2. Exterior
The Toyota Avensis has been designed based on the theme of simplicity, classiness and sophistication rather than conveying a sporty solid appearance. The recent models (ranging from 2009 to present) is designed by adding more sleek and athletic stance to the outer body. The Avensis continued to use front MacPherson struts and rear double wishbones. Major options include adaptive cruise control, adaptive front-lighting system (AFS), and bi xenon HID headlamps.
3. Interior
The Toyota Avensis has a very comfortable feeling behind its wheel. Both steering wheel and driver’s seat offer lots of movement, whereas all but entry-level Active models has adjustable lumbar support. All the seats are supportive and comfortable. The visibility of the car is pretty good; the view to the rear is much better than some competitors.
But there are still some things that make you don’t like this car. For example, many parts in the cabin are made of hard and cheap plastic, bringing a cheap feeling. These parts are the flimsy feeling lid for the cubbyhole under the centre armrest and cheap-feeling handbrake switch. The cabin design is a bit out-of-dated. The infotainment systems is too slow and easy to prone to showing a black screen when switching between displays. This may lead to many distractions for the driver at night.
However, every part in the car is located logically. Plenty of equipments are fitted for the car. Even basic models get a Bluetooth hands free system, AC, cruise control and electric heated mirrors. Business Editions offer alloys and sat-nav, climate control, among other goodies.
The cargo space is decent. The rear seats can be folded to provide 509 liters of load space. Therefore, it is quite convenient to carry stuff for a long road trip.
4. Engine And Performance
The Avensis has been designed for long distance work. The steering is precise enough but has little feedback. The suspension of the car is soft, bringing a comfortable feeling on the road. The gearbox is fine in general, though sometimes the shift feel a bit notchy as you move it around.
Overall, the Toyota Avensis is a good car to drive for the majority of the time.
5. Toyota Avensis Price
As the Toyota Avensis is a car made for low running cost, it is sold at a very affordable price. On used car market, the price of a used Toyota Avensis for sale is varying from $500 to $18,000 (FOB price). This price range is depending on model year, mileage and other conditions of the car.
