Audi A3: The Classy Audi Prince
1. Overview
The Audi A3 sits above the A1 supermini in the firm's extensive range, and maintains a shining sales success. With a classy exterior, a well crafted interior and the latest safety and efficiency technology, the A3 is the car to dominate in its class. The A3 is based on the advanced MQB platform, which is used widely within the VW Group, but Audi has tuned the chassis specifically to offer a sportier feel than any other hatchback in the family. However, it still can’t match the level of driving engagement and composure delivered by the best cars in the class – namely the sharp and involving BMW 1 Series.
Even so, the engine range is strong and extensive. Buyers can choose anything from a tiny three-cylinder 1.0litre TFSI to the range-topping S3 and five-cylinder RS 3 Sportback and Saloon. There's a three-door, five-door Sportback and Saloon, plus a four-seat A3 Convertible. With so much choice on sales, there should be an Audi A3 to suit anyone’s needs.
2. Exterior Magnificence
Audi is a brand whose image needs little work, thanks to a privilege for quality and desirability that has lasted untarnished among its fans for decades. Many people think of the brand’s cars as aspirational purchases, giving it a head-start when it comes to buyers forming an idea.
It’s fair to say that the media were let down with the lack of invention in re-making the Audi A3’s styling, but Audi insists that customers like it just the way it is. Subtly sharper panel creases and new headlights are there if you look closely, but for an all-new car the changes are surprisingly minimal. Still, it looks clean and smart, and handsome for it. There’s a fundamental rightness about the car’s design, and its looks will date very slowly, if at all.
3. Interior Comforts
The Audi A3 can accommodate to five people in the four-door sedan and five-door hatchback. The comfortable and supportive front seats have a good amount of space. However, the cramped back row is best suited for the little kids. The A3's cabin is simple yet refined, with a few soft plastics around the cabin. Leather upholstery and a power-adjustable driver's seat are standard (convertible and Sportback e-tron models are also available with a power-adjustable passenger seat). Heated front seats and sport seats are offered.
There are two sets of LATCH child-seat connectors within the Audi A3. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety rewarded the sedan’s LATCH system the second-highest rating of Acceptable for ease of use. The lower anchors may be difficult to work. All models come standard with an audio system, a 7-inch infotainment screen, a USB port, satellite radio, HD Radio, and Bluetooth. Some models also feature Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, a 12.3-inch virtual cockpit, MMI navigation, voice control, handwriting recognition, and a 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen premium audio system.
4. Mechanical Excellence
Featuring a 1.4-litre, turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with 110kW of power and 250Nm between 1500-3500rpm, the some-time two-cylinder Audi A3 is an strong small car. The four-cylinder unit strives for efficiency and will, under certain conditions, shut down the second and third cylinders to leave you with just two pots to get the job done.
Fundamentally, at torque loads of up to 100Nm, and when coasting, the Cylinder on Demand (COD) system deactivates the two cylinders provided the engine speed is sitting between 1400 and 4000rpm. This technology no doubt helps the 1.4 TFSI reach its claimed fuel consumption of 5.0L/100km, although with some spirited driving through some of the Yarra Valley’s most inviting roads, we witnessed a figure of 6.8L/100km.
5. Relentless Performance
The A3's turbocharged engine makes good thrust and commendable fuel efficiency, and its ride quality with the standard 17-inch all-season tires is very well composed. Another sign of its refinement is that cabin noise levels remain pleasant on the highway. Opting for 18-inch or 19-inch tires (as we did on the Edmunds.com long-term A3 2.0 TFSI) leads to more noise and a busier ride.
Though it's available steering-wheel shift paddles give the driver more control, the dual-clutch automatic transmission is reasonably responsive when left to its own devices. And when the fun's over, the A3's tidy size can ease parking in tight spaces. Its steering effort at low speeds is overly light but feels appropriately weighted and precise when the Audi A3 is driven with less attention. Its athleticism is amplified with the larger summer tires, which deliver more cornering grip and sharper reactions to driver inputs.
6. Safety Technology
Most of the advanced and active safety equipment is optional. It’s relieved to see automatic lights and wipers standardised across the range, along with cruise control and a suite of stability and braking aids.
Pre-collision warning, lane-keeping assist, hill-hold assist, blind-spot warning, automated parking and much more are all optional, and in many cases costly. Adding them can start to make the A3 become expensive, even for the class. Most cars in this class have autonomous emergency braking for town strolling.
A Lucrative Investment
