Important Things You Need To Know Before Buying A BMW Z4 For Sale
1. History And Overview
Strengths:
- High quality feel
- Powerful engines
- Modern styling
Weaknesses:
- Could be more interesting
- Horrid fake engine noise
The first generation BMW Z4 (E85/E86 Z4) began in 2002 and ceased in 2008. Designed by Danish BMW-designer Anders Warming, this generation was known as the E86 in coupe form and the E85 in roadster form. The Z4’s design solved many criticisms of the previous BMW Z3; and was bigger and fitted with a notably stiffer chassis. At the beginning, the BMW Z4 was only offered in the form of a roadster, but in 2006, a coupe version was officially introduced to the public. Production of the first generation BMW Z4 ended in 2008 at the Spartanburg plant.
The second generation BMW Z4 (E89 Z4) was launched in December 2008 and debuted in the following month at the 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. It is the first time BMW use a retractable hardtop in the Z series, meaning there were no longer separate coupe and roadster versions of the vehicle. The top takes 20 seconds to operate and is made of a 2-piece lightweight aluminium shell. This generation was produced at Regensburg, Germany instead of Spartanburg, United States. Production of the second generation ended in 2016.
The third generation Z4 (G29 Z4) known as the current generation Z4 was released on 23rd August, 2018 at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Instead of using a retractable hardtop like the second generation, the third generation reuses the soft-top convertible roof of the E85 Z4. The third generation BMW Z4 also uses the same platform with that of the fifth generation Toyota Supra.
2. Interior
All BMW Z4 versions give to the owners a very luxurious feeling. The whole dashboard is angled towards the driver, making a racy-feeling environment which is backed up by a purposeful, low-slung seating position. The driver’s seat is pretty supportive, and full electric operation and lumbar support adjustment are both optional.
Every interior part is easy to access and all the controls are clearly labelled and structured - like what you expect in a car made to be driven quickly and with the maximum concentration. It is also perfectly finished, from the sections of chrome and piano black trims to the stitching on the standard leather seats. Everything is well-built and cohesive.
Now let’s talk about the BMW Z4’s infotainment system. The BMW Z4 is equipped with the BMW’s latest-generation iDrive 7.0 infotainment system which is one of the best systems on the market. It’s user-friendly and responsive, thanks to BMW’s fantastic iDrive rotary controller, that is less distracting than using the touchscreen. All versions are fitted with a DAB radio, Bluetooth and sat-nav. Some of the features require a subscription, though, such as Apple CarPlay (Android Auto is not offered) and the concierge service.
It seems trickly to see what is behind you or see the end of the long bonnet with the roof up. But it isn’t a problem as all models are equipped with front and rear parking sensors, and an optional rear-view camera so you can feel confident when reversing. The car also has LED headlights which are very bright at night.
3. Passenger And Boot Space
If you are a tall driver, don’t worry as the Z4 gives you more legroom than that of the Porsche Boxster or Audi TT Roadster. The TT has more legroom, but the Z4 is not cramped on that itself. It is spacious, too so you will feel slightly less hemmed in than you would be in the TT.
In terms of boot space, the BMW Z4 offers a 281-liter boot, which is larger than those of the Porsche Boxster and Audi TT Roadster, and the boot remains the same whether the roof is closed or open. Therefore, you can carry 5 carry-on suitcases or your golf clubs with ease.
4. Engine And Performance
The BMW Z4 is fitted with an option of 194bhp and 255bhp 2.0L turbocharged petrol engines in the sDrive20i and sDrive30i variants respectively. Both engine types put down their power easily and pick up well from low revs, and the 30i feels very bit as quick as the Audi TT Roadster 45 TFSI.
5. BMW Z4 Price
On the used car market, a BMW Z4 costs from $8,000 to $35,000 (FOB price) depending on model year, mileage, installed features and other conditions of the car. So when buying a BMW Z4 for sale, you can base on these factors to choose a suitable car for your demand.
