The first generation BMW Z4 (E85/E86 Z4) began in 2002 and ceased in 2008. Designed by Danish BMW-designer Anders Warming, this generation was known as the E86 in coupe form and the E85 in roadster form. The Z4’s design solved many criticisms of the previous BMW Z3; and was bigger and fitted with a notably stiffer chassis. At the beginning, the BMW Z4 was only offered in the form of a roadster, but in 2006, a coupe version was officially introduced to the public. Production of the first generation BMW Z4 ended in 2008 at the Spartanburg plant.
The second generation BMW Z4 (E89 Z4) was launched in December 2008 and debuted in the following month at the 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. It is the first time BMW use a retractable hardtop in the Z series, meaning there were no longer separate coupe and roadster versions of the vehicle. The top takes 20 seconds to operate and is made of a 2-piece lightweight aluminium shell. This generation was produced at Regensburg, Germany instead of Spartanburg, United States. Production of the second generation ended in 2016.
The third generation Z4 (G29 Z4) known as the current generation Z4 was released on 23rd August, 2018 at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Instead of using a retractable hardtop like the second generation, the third generation reuses the soft-top convertible roof of the E85 Z4. The third generation BMW Z4 also uses the same platform with that of the fifth generation Toyota Supra.
2. Interior
All BMW Z4 versions give to the owners a very luxurious feeling. The whole dashboard is angled towards the driver, making a racy-feeling environment which is backed up by a purposeful, low-slung seating position. The driver’s seat is pretty supportive, and full electric operation and lumbar support adjustment are both optional.
