Battery Issues? Do you know how to Jump-start a car?

If the battery is not working that doesn’t mean time to replace it. It happen because you left the lights on, the keys in the ignition, or your battery is old. Sometimes situation can change by giving your car a jump start. Fortunately, if there’s another functional car nearby, or if you have a manual transmission, you can jump start the car and be on the move again soon. There are few steps which you should follow:

• Make sure the battery is the problem.

You can carry out three simple tests to confirm that the battery is dead.

1. Check the headlights. Are they dim or bright? If they are dim, it’s likely your battery is the accused. If your headlights are bright, you do not have a dead battery and a jump start will not help.
2. Put the key in the ignition and see whether your dashboard lights up as usual. In most cases, even with a low battery you should see some dashboard lights and get some sound out of the stereo. If you do not get a flicker out of your dashboard, you may have a problem with your ignition switch.

3. Try to start the car. Does it turn over very slowly, or does it crank quickly? If it cranks quickly, you do not have a dead battery and a jump start will not help. If it cranks slowly, or not at all, you probably have a dead battery.

Once you find a car that has a working battery, just park the car close enough to the dead so that you can connect the jumper cables to each car’s battery without straining the cable.

• Turn off both cars

For an extra protection turn off the ignition of your dead car. You can take out the keys from the ignition as an extra precaution.

• Connect the jumper cables in the order described below:

1. Connect one red clamp to the positive (+) terminal of the dead battery.
2. Connect the other red clamp to the positive (+) terminal of the good battery.
3. Connect one black clamp to the negative (-) terminal of the good battery.
4. Connect the other black clamp to a piece of grounded metal on the dead car
5. Make sure none of the cables are dangling into the engine compartment, where they could be exposed to moving parts.

• Recheck your jumper cable connections
  Before anything else, make sure that you have indeed connected the jumper cables as instructed.
• Start the car with the good battery
  Leaving the dead car turned off, start up the good car and let it run for a couple of minutes; around 3 or 4 minutes is good.
• Start the car with the dead battery
  Now you can start up the dead car; it should have already gotten the kick start it requires. Let it run for approximately 30 minutes.
• Remove the jumper cables

Once the dead car starts, you can start removing the jumper cables. This should be done in reverse order of how the cables were connected.
