An In-depth Honda StepWagon Review Through Five Generations
The Honda Step Wagon is a mid-sized MPV manufactured by Honda from 1996 to present
1. First Generation (1996-2001)
The first generation Stepwgn was introduced to the public at the Tokyo Motor Show 1995. The car originally went on sale on 8th May 1996. While most vehicles of the car’s competitors had the engine placed under the driver’s seat, or a cabover type, the engine of the Honda Stepwagon was the latter, and was designed based on the Honda Civic.
A sliding door was equipped for the passenger side, allowing easier access.
In this generation, a sliding door was equipped for the passenger side, allowing easier access.
To optimize profitability, Honda used cost reduction measures, such as the car design reduced the use of steel parts and panels and there was only one engine and transmission option: a 2.0-litre inline four and a CVT (continuously variable transmission automatic).
1997 update: in 1997, the Honda StepWagon received some updates such as dual SRS airbags, standardizing ABS and some convenience features.
The models went on sale in Japan in August 1997 at Honda’s Primo, Verno and Clio networks.
StepWagon field deck (1998-)
In 1998, a StepWagon version with pop-up observation tent was released. This version was made for outdoor leisure pursuits and made out of FRP (fiber-reinforced plastic).
Japan models were sold from January 1998, at Honda Auto dealers.
1999 update
A facelift of Honda StepWagon was introduced in May 1999. The rear license plate position was moved down and the appearance of the headlights was changed.
2. Second Generation (2001 - 2005)
In April 2001, Honda released the second generation StepWagon, which was largely designed based on the first generation’s design.
The second generation was made for families and children. The sliding door located on the passenger’s side was kept the same as that of the first generation. Four seating arrangements were available: “play mode” (sitting opposite each other), “sleep mode”, “food mde”, and “cargo mode” (the rear seat row is folded flat to give more cargo space).
The second generation was made for families and children.
A 2.0-litre Honda K engine DOHC i-VTEC engine was fitted for this generation, delivering 160 PS (117.7 kW; 157.8 hp), enhancing both fuel economy and driving performance. In order to improve driving performance, some parts were stiffened.
The vehicle was introduced at the 35th Tokyo Motor Show.
