Timing Belt Problems: The Reasons
It’s a bit difficult to find out if you have a broken timing belt since it gives no prior warning. It, in fact, will create no noise or exhaust any fume. Just simply one day your car will incidentally be stopped with a sudden clunky sound and won’t restart.
Consequently, the timing belt gets broken if the engine timing is not set correctly. An incorrect timing causes collisions between the valves and the pistons, which may result in a broken belt. However, a timing belt may or may not damage the valves.
Timing Belt Replacement

Disconnect and remove.
To begin with, disconnect the negative cable end of the battery. Initially, remove the alternator belt and all the accessories that are on your way to get to the timing belt. Depending on your car’s model, you may eventually have to remove the power steering pump, air conditioning compressor, and the valve cover assembly.
Afterward, take off the distributor cap too if your car has one. Many modern cars don’t have it as they make use of electronic ignitions.
Align the timing mark.
Now use a wrench to rotate the engine to align the crankshaft pulley’s timing mark at 0° on the timing scale.
Remove more accessories.
Check if you need to remove the harmonic pulley. Some car models require it to be removed for changing the timing belt. Take off the bolts and screw holding the timing cover and other devices that are on the way of the belt.
Remove the belt tensioner.
Next, remove it entirely by loosening the mounting belt as you are going to replace the timing belt. You don’t need to remove it if you just want to check the belt.
Inspect the tensioner pulley.
You have to check it meticulously to find out if it has any crack or dent. You will need to replace it first if it has any damage or has been worn out.
Remove the timing belt.
As the tensioner has already been removed, you are now facing no problem in sliding the timing belt off the sprockets. However, if it sticks, gently use a screwdriver to release it from the sprockets.
Briefly, replace the broken belt with a new one and reassemble. Make sure to check the engine manually to torque the belt correctly. The mounting bolt in the crankshaft pulley on the condition has a very high torque specification. Giving these point, pay special attention to it while reassembling the accessories.
The timing belt replacement is a slightly complicated task; especially when you consider torquing some devices to precise specifications. Therefore, don’t attempt doing it at home if you don’t have proper knowledge about car engines.
