As a normal driver, you ought to know a few basic things about your car. That way you won’t get overwhelmed in case you get a problem on the road. In this article, we’ve selected 8 basic things out of everything you need to know about cars that might be useful for you. Okay, here we go!

Everything You Need To Know About Cars For Beginners

Let’s learn 8 things below carefully to prevent bad driving situations on the road.

1. Know the mechanics of your car

You should know how your car handles and the sounds/smells it produces. Engine sounds (and smells) are the first indicator that something is wrong with your car. Listen for subtle changes in the sound of your car. They could be creaky, shaky sounds or sounds of your engine straining. At times, this may be caused by low fuel levels or oil. When this happens, you’ll need to visit a repair shop before the problem gets worse.

2. It is important to check your parking spot

Checking your parking spot is one of the important things to know about car. Always inspect the place where your car is parked. You might find that oil has leaked and left a black patch on the floor. You can also identify whether your tires are properly inflated. Doing this helps you identify future problems before they happen.

3. Always pay attention to detail

Paying attention to detail is one of everything you need to know about cars. In most cases, a car will give you signs that something is not working well. Most of these indicators are on the dashboard such as check engine light, oil pressure warning, or battery light. For example, you might notice that the temperature indicator is off long before your car overheats. Please monitor your car’s operating conditions by observing the lights on your dashboard.

4. Always check your oil and water levels

You must check your oil and water levels every day before you set off. Your oil should be smooth and clean. If it is dark and dirty, then your car is overdue for an oil change. Checking your car’s water levels ensures that your radiator (what cools the engine) has enough supply to prevent the car from overheating.

5. Don’t tailgate

You should keep a good distance between your car and the car in front of you. Keeping a good distance gives you ample time to react in case the car ahead of you suddenly brakes. During bad weather, have as much distance as possible between you and the next car. While doing this, be careful not to get bumped by the car behind you.

6. Learn some simple maintenance procedures

Even though you haven’t (or you have never) had a flat tire before, you must learn how to do it. Go it over with your mechanic, friend, or relative. Know the required tools, maintenance tips, and how to use them. Some of these simple procedures can be found in your car manual, for example, changing a fuse. The best part is that you might have a lot of fun while at it!

  • Fluid checks: Regularly inspect and top up fluids such as coolant, brake fluid, and windshield washer fluid.
  • Air filter: Replace the air filter as recommended to ensure proper airflow to the engine.
  • Battery maintenance: Keep the battery terminals clean and check for corrosion.

7. Learn some automotive jargon

One of the things to know about cars is to learn some automotive jargon. Okay, you don’t have to know everything to the last bolt. But it is good to know some basic automotive words. They make it easier to explain to the mechanic exactly what you need. Also, they make you look cool and informed!

Some things should be obvious to a careful driver but most people still need a reminder. Thanks for this. I just saved myself expensive repairs by notiing noticing the temperature gauge was off and despite my mechanic assuring me there was no problem I insisted we check the head gasket which we found to be gone and that is all we ended replacing instead of waiting for the engine to shut down and replacing nearly half the engine parts.
