Did you know back in the day "1974" when I bought my first car. There was no such thing as a "Japanese used car" At least not one you could buy from a dealer. Whatever Japanese cars that landed in New Zealand at that time were brand new. Or they were built here. There was no respect for "Cars from Japan" These were known as "Jap crap" by most petrol heads. But this one particular weekend me and the boys hired the latest Holden Belmont and took it for spin up the Coast to Northland. Well, on the way up, we were travelling in convoy behind a Pretty flash looking Holden Monaro. And we were pulling to keep up with it, right in behind. That was a thrill, Lo and behold, this car came from nowhere, behind us, just roared passed us. Took us before the next corner and sat on the tail of the Monaro. It was a Mazda RX5 wow. We had heard all about it, never seen it. The Rotary internal combustion engine short back long nose never seen it in action. By this time we were trailing behind the Mazda now, when at the next straight he pulls out and overtakes the Monaro. It was "something else" to witness!. All you could hear was the roar of that rotary engine peaking as it zipped around the outside of that Monaro and left it for dust. It was Definitely
a sight to see. After witnessing that we were absolutely stunned just couldnt believe our eyes. From that point on I definitely had a great respect for Japanese cars. As time went on I went from Fords, Mk2 Zephyr to Vauxhalls Back to Zephyr MK4. The first Japanese car I owned was a Mitsubishi Sigma. I loved that car it was easy to work on and service. I traded up to Mitsi Magna Station Wagon a great family car. Ive had my Toyota Hi-ace for 15years now, Its a "car from Japan", a van actually built in Japan. Im the first owner in New Zealand. Purchased it from
a "Japanese used car" dealer in Manukau City. It is now 2018
