I976 I Started seeing my father driving a land cruiser J70 long chases pick up which would always be over loaded and since such cars from japan where few in number in Uganda and in villages around those who had them where proud of them and monopolized the market ,our car would even be driven in woodland thicket places and created its own way as it would be used to carry fire wood and charcoal sacks for both home use and sale ,in our country there are very few tarmacked roads, cars from japan would tolerate and the truth of the matter our car would not easily slide off the road and over stay in mud and could be hired out by other local drivers to hire it towering their cars from thick dense muds this car from japan benefited the community and was our bread winner and school fees source for more than 6 children in our family .
Since time memorial my late father would hold discussion and praise the durability and efficiency of the good fuel consumption of his cars made from japan including the toyota staurt compare ed to British land-rover and German made vehicles , Due to this fact actually he inspired and influenced out my other uncles to travel to Nairobi in 1978 to go and import used datsun car sss Japanese small salon cars like Mazda from Kenya and then these would then be used as taxis and on weekends would be hired out by brides and grooms for weeding occasions there out in our small town Mityana .,surely one time in 1977 uganda hosted a grand car rally festival where many cars both European and few Japanese home made competed Ugandan's former head of state Idi Amin Dada got involved in himself as among the sport car rally Drivers in Japanese made vehicle which maneuvered and won this rally ,since then peoples attention and desire changed gradually to vehicles like Stuart
Am grateful to report to you that since 1974 European and america imposed sanctions against Victoria the importation of Japaneses cars went on being increased due to the fact that European vehicles'spare parts proved to be damned expensive and our government imported new Hondas but these could be bought on hire purchase which few could afford ,
From 1980s majority of Ugandan car importers were authorized to start the importation of used Japaneses cars from UAE and as i mentioned earlier that both new and used spares were always available in spare parts shops that had increased both in capital city and other major town councils then , we used to have little British made slow moving Reyland buses and Redford trucks and once it leaves you behind on the stage you forget about traveling until the next day ,but thanks to many Japanese vehicles that were started to be used as mini Taxis in our deep rural poor villages with poor pot holed roads and with a rough terrain and these miracle wonderful vehicles never got broke out or disappoint the owners , those who used to dominate the industry with other trucks made outside japan like Tata from India realized that since Japaneses trucks can afford to carry the same cargo or sometimes over loaded with more than what its supposed to take and at the same time runs faster than theirs it amazed them and since time is a factor in business Japanese trucks would also be preferred to take the goods and services/ jobs ,this eventually drove their businesses higher and yielded more profits ,for examples ,we have cattle ferrying trucks, raw milk ,fruits and banana trucks that have to move very fast between main towns both in Uganda and east African region cities and other comessa member states ,i want to assure you that these cars proved to be quite excellent .in northern Uganda, Mombasa side of Kenya and southern Sudan where these perishable goods are liked Japanese refrigerated car box board have done a good service to customers and delivered the goods in time and ,cheaply,
Our governments members of executive ,judiciary and legislature bodies have been given Japanese cars and our head of state Mr yoweri museveni is cruised in one toyota land cruiser which moves very fast in all types of terrain,
Majority of our foreign Ambassadors mission staffs and world bank and other multilateral ,private parastatal members of staff are driving them selves in these cars from japan
Uganda police , Army and Red cross here in our country are using cars from japan a sign or give a picture that cars from japan are easy to maintain and sustainable for our nature roads unlike other cars from other nations of the world .
Majority of our east African taxi industry or town services cars are from Japanese cars and this has made car exporting dealers like from south Korea and china and India try to import in their types of cars which is too suitable for our roads and have established assembling plants in the region like in Ethiopia and some have lobbied/ or bribed and influenced governments concerned relevant authority to ban the importation of used Japanese cars from japan on condition that they would sell them at hire purchase and expressed lame excuse that used cars from japan have lead to the increase of traffic jam and producing harmful gases in the AIR in the region but this has not at all been considered in legislature assembly our governments compared the maintenance costs of the said cars from all the nations and found it ok to go with cars from japan imported pay a lot of taxes .the governments have decided to increase on the number of new fly overs and networks of roads in urban centers to work on traffic jams, many petrol stations increased due to the fact that there is a business for cars imported from japan that buy fuels ,more jobs at car washing bays
