Japan, as we are aware of, is the most popular manufacturer of automobiles. It is also one of the largest manufacturers in the world. The history of Japanese cars dates back to the 1910s. Initially, the Japanese companies started with building their own trucks or they sold cars with a European partnership. For example, Isuzu was manufactured in partnership with Wolseley Motors in the UK. However, with the advent of World War II, Japanese vehicle manufacturers began coming out of their shells and entering the great world of automobile manufacturing.

This country is home to so many automobile industries. Some of the names of automobile manufacturers are Toyota, Mitsubishi, Honda, Mazda, Nissan, Subaru and Suzuki. This country has won so many awards for cars designed by them including International Car of the Year.

The first domestically manufactured vehicle was the Torao Yamaha bus, in 1904, which was powered by a steam engine. The first Japanese-made gasoline engine car, the Takuri, was manufactured in 1907 by Komansuke Uchiyama. The automobile industry evolved from here. However, the cars manufactured before World War II were all designed around American or European models. For example the Mitsubishi Model A was designed based in the Fiat A3-3 design. Before the war, American car manufacturers, such as, General Motors and the Ford Motor Company had production plants in Japan. However, foreign automobile manufacturers were forced out of Japan after World War II.

Although business was slow after the first decade after World War II, it once again picked up in sixties. To make it better, Japan restricted the import of automobiles in order to increase the local output. The increase kept happening as the demand nationally and internationally increased. It further increased as Mitsubishi and Honda entered the American market.

British buyers of Japanese cars increased in the 1970s. During this period, Japan exported more than one million cars internationally. Most of the automobiles were exported to the United States. The Nissan Datsun earned a good reputation in Britain as being reliable and low-cost running. The production of automobiles increased 200% and by the 1990s there was nowhere to go. The Japanese automobile industry became less competitive although production continued in a highly efficient manner.

Although initially, Japanese cars did not have a good reputation, they began to earn a reputation of being reliable and affordable. This earned the Japanese a good reputation and the country became the largest automobile manufacturer in the world by 2000. However, the market has come down from its pedestal as number one especially due to competition from other countries namely, Korea, India and China. However, this did not bring down the Japanese car market. In fact, in 2008, Toyota beat General Motors to become the world largest automobile manufacturer.

Today, Japan stands at number three in automobile manufacturing. Recently, though, China beat them to this position. Although number three, Japan’s automobile industry still remains one of the largest and the most profitable method of income .
