To win the game of attracting customers, many automakers are adding a Sport Mode to their products to make them much sportier. To help you know more about what exactly Sport Mode in cars is, let’s learn some basic things of Sport Mode in this blog.

What Is Sport Mode In Cars?

Sport Mode in cars, also known as “Dynamic” mode is a mode which turns your car into something like a sports car. Sport Mode brings to you the experience of driving a manual car but you don’t have to use a clutch or row through the gear system. The engine may rev higher before gears are changed and downshifts happen quicker, also the throttle response is altered for the engine to be responsive and eager when you are accelerating.

What Features Does Sport Mode Give To You?

  • Increased torque and horsepower
  • Tighter steering
  • Faster acceleration
  • Higher – RPM shifts
  • Stiffer Suspension
  • Increased throttle response

How To Use Sport Mode In Cars?

To use the Sport Mode, move the gear to the “S” position. It gives you extra breaking on various grades of road and let you use lower gears if you are on a hill of a mountain. Keep in mind that Sport Mode is at higher engine speeds than Drive Mode so your engine may run faster than usual but it doesn’t mean you’ve lost any power. And remember your engine will stay in Sport Mode until you shift out of it.

Now let’s talk about selection. To use it you move the shift to the S position and press the (+) or (-) button on the side of the gear shift to select gears.

  • Press (+) to up shift
  • Press (-) to down shift

Keep in mind that your engine will be at various speeds depending on what gear you’ve shift to. If your engine RPM is too high or too low, your vehicle will automatically make some shifts for you.

What Is The Difference Between Sport Mode, “Intelligent Shift Programming” And Manual Mode?

Many cars without Sport Mode often own “Intelligent shift programming”; This is a set of sensors working to help the transmission know that you require engine braking when going down a slope or when you need accelerate quickly. With the transmission still in Drive mode, in these situations the car will activate a more aggressive shift program to engage a lower gear when going down a hill or hold lower gears for longer when you want a quick acceleration. (it means the engine will support in keeping speed down, so you don’t have to rely just on the brakes).

The weakness of the “intelligent shift programming” is that it’s too smart and reactive. The system only understands what you want just after the fact and doesn’t be active for very long.

Different from the intelligent shift programming, the Sport Mode offers you a smart transmission that can stay active during the required period. To activate the Sport Mode in car, you just need to press the Sport button or move the lever to “S”, which is usually next to “D”.

And the Sport mode and the manual mode are not the same. When you drive in manual mode, the choice of gear is totally up to you. Normally, there will be H-pattern gear selector that moved over the Manual Mode side of the H will enable you to shift gears by rocking the spring-loaded lever either backwards or forwards. So when you push the accelerator down to the floor, the transmission will kick-down automatically. In case the engine is in the redline but you have not chosen a higher gear, the transmission will do it for you.

But in Sport Mode, some cars can do more than just changing transmission shift parameters – they can change the gear more quickly, leading to quicker acceleration. Depend on the model of the car, Sport Mode can give you heavier steering (to supply better road feeling), faster throttle response, firmer suspension and even can change the exhaust note. As a result of changing exhaust flows, the car may give you a sportier exhaust sound or free up a few more kilowatts.
