Do Car Covers Need Any Care?

ByMatsumoto Naoki-January 16, 2023

All car owners understand the importance of keeping their ride clean, but some need a bit of talking to, and this goes for car covers too. They don’t want to spend money to clean their car covers. Car covers protect our cars from dozen of bad elements, and they must be taken care of regularly by cleaning.

Today, we’ll discuss an easy and great method for taking care of your car cover.

Sounds interesting, right?

Let’s get started!

Washing Is All The Care Your Car Cover Needs

You only need to keep the car cover clean and dust-free for optimal and long-lasting performance. Regular washing is a requisite for taking care of your car cover. Otherwise, it will become stale earlier and will not serve you for a long time.

Before washing your car cover, you should start by removing it. You should try to separate the car cover from the vehicle it is covering. You can use a broom or a brush to remove dirt and dust.

Let’s take care of your car in a better way by washing it manually by following these easy steps.

Shake For A Minute To Lose The Dust Over It

Hold the plastic car cover in both hands, like when you clean a California Duster.

Shaking up the dirt helps to remove loose particles.

Make sure this is done in an uncluttered and well-lit area, where it will be easy to clean

One of the easiest ways that ensure the removal of dust from a car cover thoroughly is by holding it in one hand and beating it out with the help of the other hand. It helps in the removal of remaining particles.

Stretch The Cover Tightly All Over Your Car

Next, find a parking space and strap the cover onto your car. Be sure to stretch it out as tight as possible.

It takes practice to minimize creases and wrinkles. Ensure it is secure properly and there’s no chance of it falling off during the washing process.

Vacuum It Thoroughly To Remove The Sand

You should run your vacuum across the car cover to get rid of the stubborn sand. This step is very important to make sure that there is no dirt on the cover.

If you move onto the scrubbing, you will get scratches on the surface of the cover.

Make A Soapy Solution For Your Cover Cleaning

Fill a bucket with water. Add some soap to it and mix to form a lather. After preparing the solution, the set is aside somewhere.

To remove the liquid from the cover, you can use a hose. If you don’t have a hose, you can pour clean water over the cover by using a different bucket.

Do Its Scrubbing With A Towel

To return to your soap solution, you must first. Use a soft microfiber cloth or towel to scrub the cover after you soak it in the bucket. In either up-and-down or back-and-forth motions, do this diligently.

It is recommended to scrub in a single direction. There are swirls and circular motions that you should avoid. The best way to clean the cover is to begin from the top. This way, you won’t accidentally miss out on any portion.

There are stains from bird droppings and bugs that you should be attentive to. It will not wash off with just a single swap. If you can’t get rid of them after a few scrubs, give them a generous amount of soapy solution and let them sit.

The soap will break down stains slowly. Wait and scrub other parts of the car. You can go back to the stains after five minutes if you need to. Before moving on to the next step, you should scrub the car cover.

Rinse The Car Cover Thoroughly

The cover needs to be hosed down by some sections. It’s a good idea to use water that’s not too hot and rinse thoroughly. There shouldn’t be any soap residuals on the cover. If you repeat this step two to three times, it will be safe.

If you don’t have a hose, you can use buckets of clean water as a replacement. It will take more time and effort, but it will still work well. Let it sit for a while and then let it dry off.

Let The Air Dry It

Again, allow it to dry on its own. If you don’t want it to dry, you can clip it onto the clothesline. If it is still covered over your car, then just let it dry. Some sites recommend throwing it over a fence, but we don’t think that is a good idea.

It is most likely that the fence is not clean. Get it dirty again, all you have to do is do it. Make sure to park your car where it exposes to good sunlight.

After cleaning your car cover, you would want to boost the drying process for your car. If it is so, you should wash it on a windy day. However, strong winds can blow dust and debris onto your cover. To deal with this risk, it will work better if you wash it on a sunny windy day when the mild wind blows.

Bird droppings can make your cloth dirty again if you let them dry under a shade. You just have to be aware of the cover. As soon as possible, wipe the dirt away. It becomes difficult to remove once it is hardened. You have a clean car cover when it is dried.

Wrap Up

Taking care of your car cover is crucial in the same way it is important to take care of your ride, and it is much easier too. You can get the best out of your investment if you take care of your car cover and wash it regularly. Your preference should not be to buy a new car cover every other month but to make the old one last longer by taking adequate care. If you want to maintain a  car cover, you should keep it washed regularly. This way,  it will look fresh and new all the time. All you need is the right car wash machine, detergent, and water!
