Subaru Exiga - A Trusted Friend For Your Everyday Commute
1. Introduction
The Subaru Exiga (pronounced x-shiga) is a compact Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) and crossover utility vehicle (CUV) that was introduced as a concept car at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show. The name of the car “Exiga” stands for “Exciting” and “Active”.
The Subaru Exiga is a 7 seater vehicle, closely related to the Subaru Impreza and Subaru Legacy. Different from most people carriers the Exiga has a shape like a station wagon than a small Van. It is available in both standard and high-performance versions, and the range consists of a rare STi sports model.
2. Exterior and Interior
In terms of design, the Exiga has many things in common with the fifth-generation Subaru Legacy wagon, although it is slightly narrower and shorter. It features a taller roof and the distance between the wheels is longer, creating more interior space. The nose is sharp and raked, with a big chrome grille and projector-style headlamps.
The tall roof looks slightly like it floats due to blacked-out side pillars and tinted windows. The Subaru Exiga features traditional rear doors, not the sliding type normally seen on this kind of vehicle. Under the rear bumper are twin-exhaust tips.
Compared to the Legacy, the cabin of the Exiga is simpler in materials and design, and shares many things in common with an Impreza. The interior plastics feels a little cheap and hard. The steering wheel adjusts for reach and titls, and it gives you a good vier of the simple gauges with a center speedometer.
The AC is a climate control - though you will feel a bit disappointed as for a three-row vehicle which only the front row has air vents. Above the glovebox is a handy storage. The Exiga also features a stereo which is an aftermarket CD player.
The driver’s seat can be adjusted manually for height but you can not do this for the front passenger seats. Both front row occupants get fold down armrests. The second row features plenty of headroom and legroom. The centre seatback can be folded forward, providing an armrest, though this may take the seat a little uncomfortable for the middle passenger. The left-hand side of the seat folds and tumbles forward to enable access to the two third row seats. The third row also offers much room so big adults can sit comfortably. They even have an armrest moulded into the side of the car.
Now let’s talk about cargo space, with all the seats stand in their location, the cargo space of the Exiga is at 195 liters, which is the same as that of a very small hatchback. When you fold the third row forward, the cargo space is about 460 litres, offering enough space for 4 or 5 big cases. The bott floor is a bit high so you will find a bit tricky when lift in heavy stuff.
3. Engine and Performance
The Exiga is available in 4 trim options: the 2.0i is the entry level version, followed by the 2.0i-L, the 2.0i-S, all with a non-turbocharged engine, and the turbocharged 2.0GT with intercooler. A metal mesh with dark plating is for the turbo, the chrome plated version is attached to vehicles without a turbo and the front grille and hoodscoop denotes if the engine is turbocharged.
Transmission options: 4-speed automatic, 5-speed automatic and Lineartronic CVT transmission.
4. Safety Features
The Subaru Exiga received a very high safety score (5 out of 5). The safety of each version varies significantly, however, the curtain and side airbags on most models come as optional. Electronic Stability Control is equipped to most Exigas, whereas Electronic Brakeforce Distribution is standard.
Some models from 2009 have optional “Eyesight”, Subaru’s camera-based safety assistant which consists of Lane-keeping Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control and Autonomous Emergency Braking.
5. Subaru Exiga Price
The used Subaru Exiga is available on used car market with the price from $1,000 to $14,000 (FOB price). Late model 2.5-litre and 2.0GT models will gain the most money, whereas the cheaper cars are 2-litre versions.
